Tribute by Syed Imtiaz H. Gilani, Vice Chancellor, NWFP University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawar (April 23, 2007)

The Vice Chancellor, Engineer Syed Imtiaz H. Gilani has acknowledged Centre's contribution in Seismic Hazard Zonation of Pakistan as a component of Building Codes of Pakistan-Seismic Provisions 2007. Following the devastating Kashmir Earthquake 2005, the Government of Pakistan assigned NESPAK to formulate Seismic Provisions for Building Codes of Pakistan, while Pakistan Engineering Council was assigned the task of review and updating of the NESPAK's output. Pakistan Engineering Council appointed a Core Group comprising Earthquake Engineers from Academia and Industry under the convenership of Engineer Syed Imtiaz Gilani, Vice Chancellor, NWFP University of Engineering & Technology, to complete the assigned task. Considering the fact that the Seismic Provisions have to be primarily based on Seismic Hazard Zonation, the Core Group formulated a committee comprising geologists and seismologists from Pakistan, headed by Professor M. Asif Khan from this Centre, who helped NESPAK to refine the seismicity catalogue and develop active-fault map to finalize the Seismic Hazarad Zonation that was incorporated in the new Building Codes of Pakistan 2007.
